Profile on Past Interns: Claire Sicard

Working under the mentorship of Dr. Carmen Johnson at Helping Ourselves To Transform (HOTT) was incredibly enriching. My responsibilities included policy research, legal research, attending meetings with elected officials, and exploring legislation such as the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 and the 1994 Crime Bill. These tasks not only sharpened my research skills but also expanded my understanding of societal and legal issues, preparing me for my future legal career. Each day at HOTT was a real eye-opener, giving me valuable insights into nonprofit operations and broadening my understanding of decarceration efforts. Dr. Johnson’s relentless passion for public welfare was deeply inspiring, rendering my time at HOTT both educational and gratifying. Her mentorship has had a significant and enduring effect on my professional journey, and I’m extremely grateful to have had the chance to work with her.
