My time interning at Helping Ourselves to Transform has been eye-opening and insightful as I worked to help address issues facing incarcerated people and returning citizens. Working at HOTT has not only given me practical experience working with state and federal legislative bodies but also instilled the importance of core values like transparency, equality and fairness. Working with HOTT has not only helped me to enact real change in the US corrective services sector but has taught me the importance of ethical and humanitarian decision-making at both a state and federal level. Personally, my experience working at HOTT has taught me invaluable skills including legal research, policy drafting and lobbying. Dr Carmen has been a powerful role model throughout my work with HOTT, providing guidance and leadership while pursuing of justice and fairness for all people. Her unrelenting pursuit of justice and her passion have been an inspiration to me, and she has set a high standard for the rest of HOTT to follow. My work at HOTT has been an amazing one, where I truly felt I was making a difference and promoting reform. I look forward to watching HOTT’s long-term growth and their continued involvement in legislative reform.
