Mrs. Karen Smith is a native Washingtonian and currently resides in Columbia, SC. Karen brings over 20 years of management in the banking industry. Karen sat on the board for the Katie Able Foundation which specialized in “Financial Literacy”, educating the youth and low-income families. The Katie Able Foundation went into public and private schools teaching the real financial literacy on not being a consumer but creating your own business and being self-sufficient. Karen helped implement programs for adults that were in need of financial literacy service, business start-up, small loans, and the importance of saving your money and investing itself.
She is the sister of Dr. Carmen Johnson who was wrongly and unjustly convicted of crimes she didn’t commit. While her sister was at Alderson Federal Prison Camp, Mrs. Smith advocated for her sister Dr. Carmen Johnson’s early release by doing intense research on her discovery, transcripts, the criminal injustice and staying in communication with her attorneys as they went all the way to the Supreme court fighting for Dr. Johnson’s wrongful conviction. Mrs. Smith also lobbied and advocated in Congress and the Senator for the abuse that Dr. Johnson and the other women were receiving at that federal camp. Karen gave them all a voice to be heard because of the abuse they were enduring including her sister Dr. Johnson. Karen promised herself that no other male, female or juvenile would have to continue to face the injustice and abuse in the prison and court system and that she would fight for policy and legislation changes. This is why Karen produced and start HOTT, in dedication to her sister Dr. Johnson and all the people that have had the experiences her sister had. This hub will help get loved ones behind the wall or coming home the support they need as she had practiced for her sister Dr. Johnson. Karen is also focused on the dismantlement of those 9 crime act bills that started in 1968 to 1994 that created a wave of mass incarceration of our people. Karen’s goal is to also bring the services of HOTT to Columbia, SC as well.
